Get involved

Union work is not a specialist hobby. If six people can each spare ten minutes, that is an hour of help we did not have before.

Join the committee

Nominations open in spring; the AGM is in June. Four members can be co-opted through the year.

Be a dep rep

The union on your corridor. Talk to colleagues, feed issues up, bring people to meetings. Email the committee if your department is vacant.

Train as a caseworker or H&S rep

National UCU runs the courses at no cost to members. These roles have legal time-off rights.

Ten minutes

Hand out recruitment material. Staff a stall. Stick up posters. Six people giving ten minutes is an hour the branch did not have.

Put your name down

Your first port of call is ucu@essex.ac.uk. Any committee member will be pleased to hear from you. Reps are entitled by law to a reasonable amount of working time for union duties.
